Hockey participation in London is on the rise as more people are joining clubs, playing leagues and organising casual games. There are various types of hockey pitches in London to meet your requirements, such as indoor, outdoor, artificial, 3G astroturf and more. The pitches are equipped with floodlights, changing rooms, parking areas, pay as you play facilities, etc. London has an array of these clubs, pitches and leagues, so here we look at where you can pick up a stick and play.
Southgate Hockey Centre in North London is home to an excellent full sized hockey pitch. The astroturf pitch is floodlit, meaning you can play well into the evening, and changing rooms are available at the venue as well as free parking. If you'd rather use public transport, you can get to the facility via Oakwood or Cockfosters underground stations, which are both within 10 minute's walk of the centre.
Boddington Gardens is ideally located in West London, under 5 minutes from Acton Town underground station. There is a high quality, full sized astroturf hockey pitch at the venue, fit to be played on all year round. The floodlights mean that you can head down straight after work and not worry about the dark evenings, and the changing rooms mean you can change in comfort if you've come straight from work. The facility also has free parking.
Based in East London, John Orwell Sports Centre has a great hockey pitch as part of its numerous sports facilities. The astroturf pitch is well maintained and suitable to be played on even throughout the winter months. Along with floodlights and changing rooms, the centre has pay and display parking, but if public transport is more your style, Wapping overground station is under 10 minutes away.
The Furzedown Recreation Centre in Wandsworth has a single full size, all weather, hockey pitch available to hire on a pay as you play basis. The facility also has a shower and changing rooms on site that can be used by all players. There is free parking at the venue but it can also be accessed via Tooting Broadway underground station.
Home of the Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club, one of the best sides in the country, the Paddington Recreation Ground has 2 hockey pitches available to hire. The facility is right next to Maida Vale underground station so you'll have no trouble getting there for an after work session, and with floodlights and changing rooms, it couldn't be easier to get straight on the pitch and play right through the evening.
