The venue is situated just off Caledonian Road, which is also the nearest London Underground station, served by the Piccadilly line. It was voted as the October 2015 winner of our ‘Outstanding London Sports Venue’ Award and it’s not hard to see why. The venue has recently undergone a redevelopment worth £2.1m and was funded by Islington Council, the Premier League and Arsenal Football Club. Football players are able to book 5-a-side or 11-a-side pitches. All the pitches at Market Road are a 3G astroturf surface and there are also changing facilities available for players and teams. The venue is situated next door to Islington Tennis Centre so the best way to get here using public transport is travelling via the Piccadilly line to Caledonian Road, just one stop away from Kings Cross.
Islington Borough Council – Arts, Leisure and Sport
Islington has a rich selection of sports and activities for locals to book and get involved in. In 1913, Arsenal FC (formerly Dial Club) moved across the city to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury and there has been a long history of grassroots football in the area. The council has worked hard to develop and introduce a number of superb sporting facilities in the area. Islington supports local sports organisations, local sportspeople and offers advice on how residents of the borough can get active and keep fit.
GLL has been managing Sobell Leisure Centre, Highbury Leisure Centre, Archway Leisure Centre, Cally Pool, Finsbury Leisure Centre, Islington Tennis Centre and Market Road artificial turf pitches, as part of a long-term partnership with Islington Council which has seen £10 million invested into the facilities over the next 15 years. There has been additional funding market for a number of initiatives which include add to the gym and building smart new changing rooms at Archway Leisure Centre, introducing a new group exercise studio and expanding gym facilities at Islington Tennis Centre, creating an extreme adventure activity area at Sobell Leisure Centre and improving the health and fitness offer at Highbury Leisure Centre. The partnership has a strong focus on growing participation, reducing health inequalities and improving social inclusion.
